The Tamil Nadu Government is of the firm view that the retrieval of
Katchatheevu is the only solution to permanently resolve the
problems of the Tamil Nadu Fishermen. Tamil Nadu Government filed a case in
2008 in the Supreme Court of India, citing the Berubari case
judgement in 1960 and praying that the ceding of
Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka, which was part of India, by the
1974 and 1976 Indo-Sri Lankan agreements be declared null
and void as it is against the Constitution of India since no
Constitutional Amendment was carried out in Parliament. The
case is still pending. In order to protect the interests of
the fishermen of Tamil Nadu, the Tamil Nadu Government will take all
necessary steps to retrieve Katchatheevu.
